How is the Qibla direction calculated?

The Qibla direction is the initial great-circle bearing from your location to the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E), computed with standard spherical trigonometry. The result is accurate to within a fraction of a degree.

How accurate is the live Qibla compass?

The live compass combines your device's magnetometer with GPS. It is usually accurate within a few degrees. For the best reading, calibrate the compass with a figure-8 motion, keep the phone flat, and move away from magnets and metal objects.

Does the Qibla finder work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, the compass and all Qibla calculations run entirely on your device and work without internet. Only the map tiles and prayer-time lookups need a connection.

What should I do if I cannot determine the exact Qibla direction?

Face the general direction of Makkah based on the best information you have — a mosque, a map, or the flight crew when travelling. Scholars permit estimating the direction when the exact bearing cannot be determined.

Sun Qibla Method

Twice a year the sun passes directly over the Kaaba. At that exact moment, the direction of the sun — anywhere it is visible — is the Qibla.

How to use it

On the dates below, go outside a few minutes before the listed time.
Face the sun directly — that is your Qibla direction.
Alternatively, plant a vertical stick in the ground and face away from its shadow.

Compass Calibration Guide

Phone compasses are sensitive. Follow these steps for an accurate reading.

Move away from magnets

Magnetic phone cases, speakers and metal tables distort the compass. Step a few meters away from them.

Calibrate with a figure-8

Hold your phone and move it in a figure-8 motion a few times until the compass steadies.

Hold the phone flat

A tilted phone confuses the sensor. Keep it flat or level while reading the direction.

Prefer open areas

Accuracy drops indoors and near large steel structures. An open area works best.

Finding Qibla in airplane / flight mode

No GPS or internet at 35,000 feet? You can still estimate the Qibla:

Check your flight's live route on the seat-back screen — most airlines show the plane's current heading.
Ask the cabin crew: pilots usually know the aircraft's heading and can help.
If the sun is visible from your window, use the Sun Qibla method above.
When the exact direction is unknown, face the general direction of Makkah — scholars permit estimation in such cases.
